We believe that humans mess stuff up. Seriously. If you take a close look at your life (or anyone else’s around you) you’ll notice that we all seem to have the same tendency to make mistakes, fail, hurt the people we love, break our promises, brag about pointless stuff… The list goes on and on. Why? Why do we do this? In a word: Sin. The Bible tells us that “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)
And that’s a problem. Because the Bible also tells us that the salary that we earn from these failures is death (Romans 6:23) Death. That’s where it comes from? You might be asking yourself how that’s possible. Well, the fact of the matter is that God initially created men and women to live in perfect and eternal relationship with himself (Genesis 1). Unfortunately, when this human propensity to mess up reared it’s head, mankind separated itself from that perfect relationship with God. We ran from him. We chose our own way. The Bible says that we all like sheep have turned away from him (Isaiah 53:6). And it’s still true today. We still run from him…
But that’s where the amazing truth about God comes in. Even in the middle of the mess we make, God doesn’t leave us in our failures. He loves us. He made us for a relationship with him. We’re spiritual beings because we’re made to be with him. So he did something ridiculously, unfathomably amazing. He chose to pay for all of our mistakes in one fell swoop. He sent a rescue mission to get us all back. Who did he send? His son; Jesus. Jesus. The Bible says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him, will not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). It’s as simple, and yet profound, as that. Jesus died to pay for my mistakes. Your mistakes. Jesus rose again to beat back the consequences of my “mess.” His death, burial and resurrection is the one and ONLY sacrifice that pays for all our mistakes. Nothing that I do makes it possible. Nothing I am makes it possible. Nothing that I could attempt… Only Jesus. He is our way back to God. He made it possible for us to have the relationship with God that we were made to have.
